Mercenary Kings down or not working? crashes or problems?

I have the game on Steam. I installed today, started the game, saw a black screen with a white window in the center, and then the game crashed without an error message.
It's done that several times, never with a change. I opened the local files folder and tried the launcher using a myriad of different options checked and unchecked, with absolutely no change in anything. I'd be grateful for any assistance I can get, thanks!

Troubleshooting Mercenary Kings: How to Fix Common Problems and Isuses
